Division 90, arts creation and performing arts activities, was completely restructured in NACE Rev. 2.1. Paragraph 195 states that the division was split into three new groups: group 90.1, arts creation activities; group 90.2, activities of performing arts; and group 90.3, support activities to arts creation and performing arts, with various classes therein. The restructuring is a change in the grouping of the division. No code for a specific reader is determined by it.
What does the restructuring separate?
The restructuring separates three kinds of work that the old division held together: creating art, performing art, and supporting the creation and performance of art. Group 90.1 holds arts creation activities. Group 90.2 holds activities of performing arts. Group 90.3 holds support activities to arts creation and performing arts. The titles state the dividing lines in heading form, and the explanatory notes for the groups and classes state the contents in full. Section 4 does not name the classes inside the groups, and it states only that there are various classes therein. This guide does not invent class titles or numbers for the groups, and it does not state a class list that section 4 does not give. The detailed structure in Part 2 lists the classes, and the notes state their contents.
The separation of support activities into their own group is the most consequential part of the restructuring for reading statistics. Support work, such as the technical, organisational and promotional work that enables creation and performance, is now grouped apart from the creation and performance work itself. The grouping follows the manual’s principle of grouping by the character of the activity, and it allows statistics to show support work separately from the artistic work it supports. The boundary between support and creation, and between support and performance, is stated in the notes for the groups and classes, and the notes must be read where the character of the work is in question in general terms.
How does the restructuring relate to division 91?
The restructuring of division 90 sits beside the restructuring of division 91, libraries, archives, museums and other cultural activities, in paragraph 196, which is covered in a separate guide. The two divisions together form the cultural core of Section S, arts, sport and recreation, in NACE Rev. 2.1. The old Section R became Section S in the letter shift, and the two divisions inside it were both restructured at the same time. A reader working in the cultural field should therefore check both divisions, and the notes for both, before placing an activity, because an activity that resembles arts creation may belong in the cultural heritage division, and an activity that resembles museum work may belong in the arts division, according to the notes.
The pairing also shows the scale of the revision in the section. The revision did not merely split one class or rename one group. It redrew the grouping of two whole divisions, creating new groups and new classes inside them, and it did so under a new section letter. A comparison of figures for the old division 90 with figures for the new division 90 must therefore use the correspondence table and the notes, and must state the version and the reference period, before any change in the figures is described as a change in the underlying activity. The change in the figures may reflect the restructuring alone, and the correspondence table is the document that separates the restructuring effect from any other effect.
How is the restructuring shown?
| New group | Title in the manual |
|---|---|
| 90.1 | Arts creation activities |
| 90.2 | Activities of performing arts |
| 90.3 | Support activities to arts creation and performing arts |
The table follows paragraph 195. It lists the three groups and their titles, and it does not list classes, because paragraph 195 does not name the classes. The detailed structure lists the classes in each group, and the explanatory notes state their contents. The table in this guide is a summary of the manual summary, and it must not be quoted as a complete account of the division.
What does a split not decide?
This cluster presents no correspondence mapping as a one to one guarantee where a split or rearrangement is recorded in the table. A clean split is recorded as one to many, and content rearranged across several categories is recorded as many to many. Joint scopes appear in the table in both cases, and reading the note for each new class is still required. This page guardrail states the limit directly, and the guide body repeats the limit in its own wording.
Where is a split class confirmed?
Each new class explanatory note and the correspondence table entry for the old group or class show the split, and the national statistical institute or business register holding the record confirms the entry held for the unit concerned.
Separate creation, performance and support work by the group notes, check the detailed structure for the classes inside each group, and confirm the entry with the institute or register that holds it.
